Citroën es una de las marcas llamadas generalistas que más innova en sus coches. Por norma general, siempre ha ido a su aire, por su propio camino ofreciendo productos diferentes, muy llamativos y con mucha tecnología. Prueba de ello es el primer coche con chasis monocasco y tracción delantera, el Citroën Traction Avant, y más cercano a nuestro tiempo, el mítico Citröen DS, el Tiburón. Aunque no deberíamos olvidarnos de los Citroën CX o incluso de los Citroën Xantia Activa, que no se inclinaban un ápice en curva.
Durante un tiempo no fueron tan diferentes. El mercado manda y la “casa madre”, Peugeot, no quiere sorpresas ni tonterías. Por ello, aparecieron los Xsara o el Saxo, así como el Citroen C5 o el actual C4, un mundo completamente diferente al anterior que representaba lo que siempre ha sido Citroën casi a la perfección. No obstante, para el regocijo de algunos seguidores de Citroën entre los que yo me encuentro, la marca ha vuelto a recuperar cierto espíritu que tenía antaño y ha lanzado el Citroën C4 Picasso, con una estética bastante particular y el Citroën C4 Cactus, que es un coche particular en todo su concepto.
Es una marca aventurera y atrevida, y prueba de ello, a parte de todo lo que os he contado, es el coche que se aprecia en las imágenes. Se trata de un modelo experimental, aparecido allá por 1969 y que representa perfectamente la idea que se tiene de Citroën, o al menos la que yo tengo.
La historia de este curioso aparato comienza en 1967, cuando Citroën y NSU se alían y crean Comotor. Fruto de esta alianza nace el bloque Wankel monorrotor de 995 centímetros cúbicos y 49 cv a 5.500 rpm. Para experimentar esta mecánica para su posible empleo en la calle, se decidió por desarrollar un coche que sirviera de mula.
Se optó por emplear el chasis de la famila AMI, un coche bastante peculiar, pero se modificó para poder incorporar la suspensión hidroeléctrica y el motor Wankel de un solo lóbulo. La carrocería era única, especifica para el concept, con una silueta coupe de dos puertas, una exagerada caída trasera y un frontal que a pesar de ser prácticamente clavado al de la familia AMI, solo compartía con éstos los faros. De su fabricación se encargo el carrocero Heuliez.
Tras un estudio, Citroën estimó una cuota de 5.000 ejemplares, que irían precedidos de una serie de 500 prototipos. En 1969 se construyeron 6 prototipos para pruebas aunque el proyecto no comenzara exactamente hasta 1970. Los seis coches que se habían construido se entregaron a pilotos de pruebas y especialistas, que rodaron con ellos más de un millón de kilómetros.
También se entregaron otras 206 unidades destinadas a pruebas. Citroën se las entregó a clientes fidelizados de la marca con la única condición de que tenían que realizar más de 30.000 kilómetros al año, una idea bastante buena de los franceses que les libraba de ciertos costes de desarrollo y probaba los coches directamente en la vida real. También pusieron como condición que debían comunicar cualquier incidencia a un departamento de Citroën dedicado únicamente al proyecto M35, incluido el mantenimiento completo. Estas primeras unidades llegaron a marcar velocidades de nada menos que 175 km/h en algunas pruebas. Era muy rápido para la época y se entregaron a cambio de 14.000 francos, muy cerca de lo que se pedía por un Citroën DSpecial. Por último, todas las unidades llevaban la inscripción “M35 Prototype” con el número de serie en las aletas.
El proyecto se abandonó muy temprano, apenas unos años después, en 1971, tras construir 267 coches todos ellos prototipos. El principal problema que provocó este cese en el proyecto fue la fiabilidad. Durante aquellos años, los primeros del motor rotativo inventado por el Dr. Wankel, existía el problema de la estanqueidad, el mismo que sufría NSU en sus Prinz Coupe o el Ro 80.
Después de tomar esta decisión, se contactó con todos los propietarios del Citroën M35 ofreciéndoles la posibilidad de entregarlo y obtener importantes descuentos y facilidades a la hora de adquirir cualquier otro modelo de la marca, o bien, quedárselo firmando antes un documento que eximía a Citroën de disponer de piezas de recambio para sus coches en los diez siguientes años, que era lo que se exigía por ley para los coches que cesaban su producción. Lo que fueron entregados, terminaron destruidos para evitar el espionaje industrial y los que no fueron entregados rodaron durante poco tiempo, pues la mecánica, que no estaba 100% probada, comenzó a dar problemas y averías, por lo que terminaron abandonados o en el desguace, provocando que hoy queden muy pocas unidades.
En algunos medios de la época donde lo pusieron a prueba, muchos comentaban que era fácil de conducir y rápido si tenían sitio para lanzarlo, pero que el motor Wankel de un solo rotor estaba completamente falto de fuerza y obligaba siempre a conducirlo en marchas cortas y siempre con el pedal del acelerador a fondo.
También hay que comentar que aunque terminara en un fiasco, el proyecto M35 sirvió para el desarrollo del Citroën GS Birrotor, conocido también como Citroën GZ, que salió en 1973 y que rendía 107 cv.
