Que la industria británica del automovilismo no está en su mejor momento no es nada sorprendente para nadie, pero si hablamos de historia el asunto cambia por completo. Y hablar de historia del motor en Gran Bretaña es hablar del Jaguar E-Type. Con 53 años de historia sobre sus ruedas, la silueta alargada de este descapotable hizo que pronto se le conociese con el nombre de “la zapatilla”.
Pues los amantes de este modelo están de enhorabuena gracias a los chicos de Jaguar Heritage, el departamento responsable de vehículos clásicos de la recién estrenada división especial de Jaguar – Land Rover “Special Operations”, responsables de la reedición del Jaguar E-Type Lightweigth.
Lo que hace más exclusivo esta reedición será sin duda su chásis, ya que se harán a partir de los 6 chasis restantes de los 18 que inicialmente Jaguar tenía previsto fabricar dentro del proyecto Special GT E-Type, una versión especial del E-Type con carrocería de aluminio lanzados entre 1963 y 1964 y del que finalmente se llegaron a fabricar 12 unidades.
Es más, para seguir manteniendo ese aura especial de antaño, estos modelos de reedición se fabricarán de forma totalmente artesanal en la planta de Browns Lane, Inglaterra, la misma que vió nacer al E-Type por primera vez.
Pero vayamos a lo que verdaderamente interesa. Lo primero que llama la atención del coche es sin duda su carrocería de aluminio, lo cual le otorga un ahorro de peso de 114 kilogramos respecto al E-Type convencional, que tiene carrocería de acero. Además, para seguir fiel a la tradición, se prescindirá de materiales y métodos de ensamblaje modernos, lo cual permitirá a su afortunado dueño inscribirlo para las competiciones de vehículos históricos de la FIA.
El motor también será un clásico, ya que montará el conocido bloque de 3.800 c.c y seis cilindros en línea del Jaguar XK que rinde una potencia de 340 cv, y con el que la marca obtuvo la victoria en Le Mans durante 5 ediciones allá en la década de los 50. Fabricado en aluminio, este motor cuenta con doble árbol de levas en cabeza, lubricación por cárter seco y carburadores Webber, aunque opcionalmente los clientes podrán optar por un sistema de inyección mecánico de combustible Lucas. Este bloque irá asociado a una caja de cambios manual de cuatro velocidades sincronizadas similar a la del modelo construido en los 60.
Pero los guiños a la versión original no quedan ahí. En el exterior, la suspensión delantera será de paralelogramo deformable, y la trasera independiente con amortiguadores mejorados similares a las que se utilizaban en la competición de la época. También se mantiene la dirección de cremallera y los frenos traseros, mientras que las llantas de 15 pulgadas serán como las antiguas.
Por su parte, el interior también es lo más tradicional posible, con el volante de aro de madera, los asientos forrados en cuero, e incluso limitando los revestimientos sólo para lo realmente necesario. Sin embargo, no olvidemos que este vehículo está destinado a una clientela realmente exclusiva, y como el cliente siempre tiene la razón, cada coche de esta serie se fabricará atendiendo a las preferencias de su comprador, el cual podrá revestir todo el interior con tapizados personalizadas o elegir colores para la carrocería.
Se prevé que el primer modelo reeditado del Jaguar E-Type Lightweight se presente el próximo 14 de agosto en la recepción inaugural de uno de los eventos más importantes del mundo del automóvil clásico: el Pebble Beach Automotive Weekend. En cuanto al precio, lo ejemplares originales están valorados en varios millones de euros, pero no sabemos cuánto cobrará Jaguar a los seis compradores del E-Type Lightweight.
