JEEP Renegade Night Eagle

El JEEP Renegade es un SUV, un todocamino, cuya longitud llega hasta los 4,2 metros posicionándose en el segmento del intocable Nissan Juke, del Renault Captur o del Peugeot 2008. Se fabrica en Italia, en la planta que FIAT tiene en Melfi y ha sido desarrollado de manera conjunta entre los italianos y JEEP, aprovechando además ciertos componentes del FIAT 500X y 500L. Es el primer modelo que se fabrica fuera de las fronteras americanas y el primer SUV de sus características para JEEP.

Si bien resulta una descripción bastante acertada, aunque muy escueta, del JEEP Renegade, ni siquiera llega a raspar la superficie de todo lo que esconde este pequeño SUV sellado por tan mítica firma. Tras pasar unos días con el coche no voy a decir que vale lo que cuesta, pero si voy a decir que yo lo pagaría. No soy persona de SUV, si eres lector de Freno Motor seguro que lo sabes ya, pero este modelo tiene algo; quizá sea su imagen, quizá sea lo exótico de tener un JEEP o simplemente, que resulta un buen trabajo por parte de ambas marcas, pero los 19.970 euros que piden por este JEEP Renegade Night Eagle 1.6 MultiJet II de 120 CV no me parecen descabellados ni excesivos.

Este ‘Renegado’ llega en pleno apogeo del segmento de los SUV pequeños y es el primer fruto del consorcio FIAT Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Pero no lo tendrá fácil, el Nissan Juke tiene ganada a la clientela, Peugeot han puesto mucha carne en el asador con el 2008 y Renault, por mencionar unos pocos, se aprovecha de sus sinergias con Nissan para darle al Captur todo lo necesario para triunfar.

Diseño exterior, interior y acabados

Probamos el JEEP Renegade

Sin embargo el JEEP Renegade tiene, al menos para mi, una batalla ganada y es que estéticamente les da sopas con ondas a todos. Es sin duda un JEEP de los pies a la cabeza, o de las ruedas al techo en este caso. Es un ‘rompecuellos’, la gente se gira para mirarte, sobre todo los chavales llegando a escuchar algunas expresiones como ‘qué guapada’ mientras ves por el retrovisor como levantan el móvil (imagino que para sacar fotos). Pero no sólo los chavales quedan encandilados, durante los días que he tenido el coche he visto a señores de pelo en pecho pararse a mirar el coche estando aparcado, rodeándolo y fijándose en cada detalle. Porque además, detalles le sobran.

JEEP ha cuidado la imagen del Renegade, entrar en el segmento SUV pequeño en Europa es tirarse a la piscina sin saber si hay agua, es un mercado donde las cosas no se regalan y no importa que sea JEEP quien firma el coche, aquí tienes que ganartelo y los americanos, con ayudas de italianos, han creado un SUV que entra por los ojos. Fijate por ejemplo en los pilotos traseros, cuyo diseño en X esconde algo más: el típico frontal de JEEP de toda la vida a modo de anagrama. O la denominación en las puertas del coche, cuya letra D contiene una X en su interior que recuerda la forma de los pilotos, o el rotundo frontal con faros redondos y la calandra ‘Made in JEEP’, o las llantas, o el tono mate de la carrocería exclusivo de la versión Night Eagle…

Pero no creáis que aquí acaba todo, porque al entrar en su habitáculo esos detalles también siguen dejándose ver, como el mismo anagrama de los pilotos traseros en algunos plásticos, el asa enfrente del copiloto típico de los todoterreno, su instrumentación con unas grafías específicas y decorado que imita salpicaduras de barro, el pomo del selector, el volante; todo rematado además de forma muy correcta resultando un interior agradable tanto a la vista como al tacto. Cierto es que el diseño deja clara su procedencia yankee, pero eso forma parte de su encanto. Además, todo funciona bastante bien aunque hay ciertas cosas como el tacto de los mandos que activan los limpiaparabrisas por ejemplo no terminaron de gustarme.

Piloto trasero del JEEP Renegade

Los asientos están bien diseñados y son cómodos, aunque un poco cortos en la longitud de la banqueta. Una vez me dijo una persona que de esto sabe un rato, que suele hacerse para ofrecer mayor impresión de amplitud, parece que hay más sitio con unos asientos un poco más cortos (¡gracias David!); por mi parte que se dejen de trucos baratos y pongan unos asientos como deben, aunque con estos el paso de los kilómetros no es un problema.

De todas formas, no todo es estética y es necesario una gama coherente y con posibilidades para lograr algo en tan competido segmento. El ‘Renegado’ ofrece 2 motores de gasolina y 3 diésel, tracción delantera o dos tipos de tracción total, cambio manual de 5 y 6 relaciones y otras dos automáticas, una de doble embrague y otra de convertidor de par y 9 marchas. La paleta de colores es suficientemente amplia, hay posibilidad de personalización, varias tapicerías según la versión y muchas cosas que permiten configurar el coche al detalle, aunque eso sí, la tarifa sube en consecuencia.

La unidad que nos dejó FCA es la edición especial Night Eagle, un nombre muy americano, que además del espectacular color mate ‘Vulcano Sand’ trae otra serie de detalles específicos de esta versiones como el tapizado de los asientos (con ajuste lumbar eléctrico para conductor), el volante de piel, control de crucero o climatizador manual, destacando por encima de todo el sistema Uconnect con pantalla táctil de 5 pulgadas típico de otros modelos del grupo FCA o los sensores de aparcamiento. Bajo el capó, el motor diésel más pequeño, el 1.6 MultiJet II de 120 CV únicamente disponible con tracción delantera y cambio manual de seis relaciones.

Motor, comportamiento y sensaciones.

Este motor, sin ser un portento en prestaciones y respuesta, se encuentra en general, totalmente a juego con el coche. Resulta una mecánica agradable que vibra y se deja notar en según qué circunstancias pero no llega a molestar nunca. Como todos los motores modernos ‘downsizing’, hasta que la aguja del tacómetro no llega a las 1.500 rpm parece un motor asmático pero llega rápido y desde ahí, el empuje es coherente con las cifras de potencia y par.

No es el coche más rápido del segmento, pero permite adelantamientos con cierta soltura y recuperaciones muy dignas, aunque si quieres repris de verdad tendrás que bajar marchas porque las dos últimas, 5ª y 6ª, están pensadas para rodar en autopista cuidando consumos, que por otra parte, no son bajos, pero si aceptables. Según el ordenador, entre 6 y 6,5 litros a los 100 km, pero claro, su diseño es como una caja de zapatos y la aerodinámica de una caja de zapatos es, por si no lo sabíais, nefasta. Eso sí, es aislamiento está muy conseguido y resulta muy cómodo recorrer kilómetros con él.

Por otra parte, el comportamiento está claramente enfocado al asfalto. La suspensiones contienen bien los movimientos de la carrocería que no inclina ni cabecea en exceso y ofrece un tacto que recuerda más a un compacto que a un SUV. Permite hacer payasadas fuera del asfalto y tiene las mejores costas de entrada y salida de todos los SUV, pero mejor si el terreno no es especialmente roto ni con muchos agujeros porque la suspensión no está pensado para ello. Reconocer también que no me adentre en exceso en terreno fuera de carretera, tan solo un par de caminos de tierra con agujeros pequeños y piedrecitas sueltas para sacar las fotos y poco más, pero la suspensión se nota firme en estos menesteres.

La posición de conducción es buena, con el asiento un pelo arriba y una postura muy erguida respecto a una berlina tradicional pero que permite una buena visibilidad. El tacto del cambio me gustó mucho, con un pomo tirando a grande muy cómodo a pesar de ser plástico puro y duro. El tacto de los pedales también es agradable, destacando el freno, con un tacto bastante bueno. La dirección no está excesivamente asistida y es suficientemente precisa y rápida, al menos para mi gusto y en general, tanto el sistema multimedia como el navegador equipado y el climatizador, funciona bastante bien y apenas se les pueden poner pegas.

Conclusión

Es posible que de la impresión de que no existen pegas en este coche, una impresión equivocada lógicamente, ningún coche es perfecto. Por ejemplo, aunque resulta un coche relativamente amplio, sigue siendo un SUV pequeño con la consiguiente falta de espacio y cuatro personas van justas, no apretadas, pero si justas. El pilar A molesta un poco en los giros a izquierdas (rotondas) y el tacto de algunos botones como la regulación de los espejos es claramente pobre, pero como conjunto cumple sobradamente en casi todo.

Desprende personalidad por sus cuatro costados, su motor es suficiente para el día a día y los consumos en la media, no es especialmente caro y su comportamiento es muy sano, haciendo gala además de unos acabados muy decentes. ¿Me lo compraría? Pues mira, si.
