El Goodwood Festival os Speed se está llevando a cabo en el Reino Unido. Es una demostración de la cultura del mundo del automóvil, y ha ido creciendo en importancia y alcance año tras año.
Muchos fabricantes de todo el mundo, utilizan la subida de la colina como una oportunidad para mostrar sus nuevos modelos, variantes o concept cars. Además, cada año se elige a un fabricante para la construcción de una escultura sobre la Goodwood House, que da la bienvenida a los visitantes y celebra su herencia. Este año, el encargado ha sido Mercedes-Benz, que ha decidido mostrar su exito en las carreras con esta escultura en forma de arco de plata.
El fabricante de automóviles de Stuttgart contrató al escultor Gerry Judá para diseñar un escaparate extravagante. Sin duda, de esto último no le falta, ya que tiene 26 metros de altura, 90 metros de largo, una curva de 45 metros y un peso de 160 toneladas. Mercedes dice que es la escultura más “ambiciosa” que jamás se ha visto en el evento. Lord March, el fundador de este festival, debe de estar de acuerdo después de calificarla como la escultura más desafiante arquitectónicamente y artísticamente jamás erguida en el lugar.
Y, ¿qué mejor manera de mostrar sus 120 años de éxito en las carreras? El arco está adornado con dos coches, un Mercedes-Benz W 25 Silver Arrow similar al que utilizó Manfred von Brauchitsch para conseguir la victoria en el circuito de Nürburgring Nordschleife, y un Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W04 con el que Lewis Hamilton compitió en 2013. Entre ellos existe una conexión poética, ya que son el primer y el último modelo de Mercedes en utilizar motores V8 para las carreras. Sería una verdadera lástima que el W04 pasara a la historia como la última “flecha de plata” en montar un motor V8.
En la galería de fotos podéis ver los coches que Mercedes trajo para conmemorar la estatua con una subida de la colina nocturna, incluyendo un SLS AMG Black Series que lleva un acabado reflectante. También hubo un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales. Está claro que la empresa germana no ha reparado en gastos para autocomplacerse.
