Fue Toyota a quien podríamos otorgar el honor de ser la precursora de los SUV con su RAV4 lanzado por primera vez en 1994. Era un modelo de pequeño tamaño, 3 puertas, aspiraciones deportivas y hasta podríamos decir que juvenil. Desde aquel primer RAV4 han pasado ya 22 años, un total de 4 generaciones y 6,5 millones de unidades vendidas. La carta de presentación impresiona.
Pero en todos estos años, Toyota, la marca que más apuesta por la hibridación y que además, podemos considerar como pionera con la primera generación del Prius, no había empleado la tecnología híbrida en ningún SUV hasta ahora, por lo que estamos ante el primer SUV híbrido de la marca japonesa. Ha llegado con el restyling que ha sufrido el modelo tras llevar tres años en el mercado y la marca espera que el 66% de las ventas correspondan a esta versión híbrida.
Si conoces Toyota, aunque sea sólo un poquito, sabrás que la firma japonesa apuesta fuerte por la tecnología híbrida, mucho más que por los diésel que ni siquiera diseña ni fabrica, se los compra a terceros como ocurre con el 2 litros de 143 CV, que es de origen BMW. Como dato, la marca espera que en 2020 más del 50% de sus modelos vendidos en España sean híbridos, para lo que no cabe duda que hacía falta un SUV viendo el tirón que tienen en el mercado.
Toyota anuncia a bombo y platillo que el 60% de los híbridos que se venden en todo el mundo llevan el logotipo de Toyota o en su defecto, de Lexus. Han logrado vender nada menos 8 millones de unidades, de los que 1 millón corresponden a Europa, donde tienen el 75% del mercado. Son cifras para tener en cuenta y que le otorgan una gran experiencia con estas motorizaciones.
Diseño exterior, interior y acabados
Visto lo visto está claro que el RAV4 Hybrid es un modelo importante para Toyota, además, entra a luchar en un mercado que en 2015 vendió 100.000 unidades sólo en España, así que las cosas están complicadas. Lógico pues, que Toyota haya trabajado intensamente en el modelo.
Para empezar, el actual RAV4 poco tiene que ver con aquella primera generación, ha cambiado de categoría y de público objetivo y ahora se postula como una opción mucho más familiar y hasta cierto punto lujosa, no en vano, la unidad probada pasaba de los 40.000 euros, tenía tapicería de cuero, navegador, camara trasera, luces Bi LED… vamos que venía equipado. Estéticamente no destaca por nada, no es un coche feo pero tampoco te encandilará por su imagen, sus atributos son otros, aunque sí ha buscado diferenciarse un poco con algunos detalles para que se pueda reconocer como la versión híbrida del modelo, como son los detalles en azul en el logotipo de Toyota y la palabra ‘hybrid’ en algunas zonas de la carrocería.
Su diseño es muy japonés, sólo tienes que ver las fotos para darte cuenta y esta percepción también la tienes en el habitáculo, donde la sensación es ciertamente agradable, pero chocan algunas cosas. Por ejemplo y dejando el diseño a un lado, tiene un acabado general muy correcto, ajustes buenos y materiales al mismo nivel, pero hay una mezcla de calidades y tactos un poco extraña. La parte superior del salpicadero es de plástico duro, mientras que la zona central está tapizada en cuero muy agradable a la vista y al tacto, a la vez que las puertas y la zona central, donde se coloca el selector del cambio, tiene otro plástico diferente. Repito que la sensación general es bastante buena y estas cosas pasan desapercibidas, pero si te dedicas a toquetear todo como yo, te acabas dando cuenta.
Los asientos, con ajuste eléctrico el del conductor, me gustaron bastante. La postura es cómoda y es fácil sentirse a gusto en el coche. Otra cosa que me llamó la atención es que el asiento del copiloto va colocado más arriba, es una sensación un tanto extraña bajarte del puesto de conductor y sentarte en ese asiento.
Hay un punto que no me gusto nada y es que la pantalla del navegador no se ve un carajo cuando le da el sol, no se ve absolutamente nada y cuando estás echando marcha atrás en una zona de parking con bolardos te pasa como a mi, que te confías y cuando miras a la pantalla te das cuenta de que no ves nada demasiado tarde. Menos mal que era de plástico hueco…
Motor, comportamiento y sensaciones
La palabra agradable también podemos usarla para describir su conducción. Es un coche muy cómodo, con una dirección con asistencia justa para que no resulte demasiado blanda (aunque informa poco) y una insonorización muy buena. Pero hay que destacar algunos puntos.
El motor del Toyota RAV4 Hybrid es un 2,5 litros de gasolina que trabaja en ciclo atkinson (más eficiente que el ciclo Otto, más común en los motores de gasolina) que rinde 155 CV y está unido a un motor eléctrico de 143 CV. Hay otra versión llamada e-AWD que tiene un segundo motor eléctrico de 68 CV asociado al eje trasero, pero no es el caso. En total son 197 CV los declarados por Toyota que pasan a través de un cambio CVT a las ruedas delanteras.
Hasta aquí todo bien, normal, es el mismo motor que monta el Lexus NX que además declara unos consumos de cerca de 5 litros a los 100 km de media, pero es un dato para el mercado europeo, en Estados Unidos, cuyo ciclo de homologación es bastante más creíble, homologa 7,2 litros. He aquí el primer punto a destacar; el motor eléctrico sólo funciona al arrancar, en aceleraciones fuertes y en ocasiones, para asistir al de gasolina en algunas situaciones y no se puede enchufar. El cambio entre funcionamiento eléctrico, híbrido o sólo gasolina es imperceptible,logradísimo, pero no es capaz de ayudar a bajar los consumos de los 7 litros. Es lo más bajo que fui capaz de ver en el ordenador de a bordo. En una ocasión logré ver 6,7 litros y en otra 6,3, pero fueron momentáneos, el grueso del tiempo rondaba los 7-7,3 litros. .
El funcionamiento de la mecánica es muy, muy suave, ni siquiera tienes vibraciones que te digan que el motor de gasolina está en marcha hasta que necesitas hacer un adelantamiento o una incorporación y aceleras a fondo. Ahí es cuando te das cuenta de lo desagradable que suena esta mecánica. El cambio CVT lo que hace es mantener el motor en la zona de par, donde mejor rinde, pero su sonido no se corresponde con la aceleración ni con lo que haces con el pedal del gas. Es una sensación muy rara que no es del gusto de todos. Toyota dice haber trabajado en ello porque conoce la situación y saben que no a todos les gusta esa impresión de resbalamiento continuo, pero poco o nada parecen haber conseguido.
Otro de los puntos que cabe destacar es que hay que pisar mucho el acelerador para que el RAV4 corra todo lo que puede, aunque la sensación es que no tiene 197 CV, sino algo menos, si bien estamos hablando de un coche que pesa más de 1.600 kg. Volviendo al tema del pedal, cuando circulas tranquilo por ciudad es muy fácil mantener el coche al ritmo de una persona, pero si quieres que se mantenga el sistema en ‘ECO’ (lo puedes controlar con el indicador que sustituye al tacómetro), tienes que pisar muy suavemente, en cuanto aprietas un poco más de la cuenta salta el gasolina.
Esto también ocurre cuando quieres ganar algo de velocidad en carreteras secundarias. Pisar el acelerador como en cualquier otro coche no se traduce en aceleración, gana velocidad sí, pero muy lentamente y cuando te fijas por el espejo llevas una cola de coches detrás y ni siquiera has alcanzado la velocidad máxima permitida. Tienes que pisar el acelerador un poco más, ver cómo la aguja del indicador se acerca al power para poder ganar algo de velocidad, pero seguirá siendo muy tranquilo en la maniobra, si quieres ganar velocidad relativamente rápido, tendrás que pisar bastante lo que manda al garete los consumos.
De todas formas el coche no invita a correr, sino a realizar todo con tranquilidad, el dinamismo no va con él y se le nota torpón, con movimientos de la carrocería notables y deslizamientos apreciables. El problema es que con la suavidad de funcionamiento y el aislamiento tan logrado, siempre tienes la sensación de ir demasiado despacio. Te sientes muy seguro a sus mandos, siempre que no te pases de la raya.
No obstante, la suspensiones de tarado tan suaves ofrecen mucha comodidad y un buen comportamiento fuera de carretera, que si bien no es su lugar preferido, te permite ciertas escapadas. Yo le metí por algunos agujeros un poco comprometidos para un SUV y salió sin excesivos esfuerzos y con alguna que otra derrapada aprovechando que el CVT permite un manejo secuencial simulando 6 relaciones, opción muy recomendable cuando se bajan puertos o zonas demasiado empinadas ya que ayuda a frenar usando la retención del motor.
Conclusión
Toyota es famosa por hacer buenos coches y el RAV4 Hybrid no es una excepción, aunque como ocurre con todo, para gustos los colores. El RAV4 Hybrid es un buen coche en general, bien acabado, con un funcionamiento muy suave, grande y cómodo, pero en vías rápidas no ofrece la reducción de consumo que cabe esperar, la batería se agota pronto y sólo se carga levantando el pie del acelerador, en frenadas o en ocasiones, en marcha con el motor de gasolina (también puedes forzar la carga mediante un botón).
En poblado si que puede ayudar a reducir consumos ya que es muy fácil rodar en eléctrico continuamente, pudiendo ‘forzar’ el modo EV puro pulsando un botón. También hay otros dos botones, uno para el modo Sport y otro para el ECO, pero yo personalmente no encontré muchas diferencias entre ambos.
